Fire and Rain

“…I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen rain,
I’ve seen sunny days that I thought would never end.
I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend.
But I always thought I’d see you again …”

So goes the chorus of the song ‘Fire and Rain’, composed and sung by James Taylor in 1970. On a train journey, I looked out of the window and saw a bright blue sky and soft white and vanilla-coloured clouds hovering over a dark grey ‘wall of rain’ on the horizon. A ray of sunlight shone through a cloud onto a patch of green meadow and looked pale red, like a fire in the middle of heavy rain. This sight reminded me of ‘Fire and Rain’, that beautiful song by James Taylor, and inspired me to create this painting.
