“It was in the middle of my life’s journey that I found myself in a dark forest, for I had strayed from the right path.” (Inferno 1, 1 – 3). This is how the description of hell begins in the ‘Divine Comedy’, the main work of the Italian poet and philosopher Dante Alighieri (1265 – 1321), which is considered the most important poem in Italian literature and is regarded as one of the greatest works of world literature. Dante’s hell was the inspiration for my painting, although we experience other ‘hells’ in many different forms in our world. But hell can also be left, like the poet Dante, who had only visited it and continued his journey towards higher spheres…
