His tranquil landscapes, his small forests illuminated by sunlight or shrouded in mist, or iconic works such as the ‘Wanderer above the Sea of Fog’, painted around 1818 and hanging in the Hamburger Kunsthalle, are full of enigmatic, fascinating symbolism.
