This painting is a tribute to Raffaello Sanzio, who, alongside Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti, belonged to the so-called ‘triumvirate’ of the Renaissance. Like the two aforementioned artists, he had a significant influence on art history, for example, his Madonna paintings, such as the famous Sistine Madonna, which hangs in the Old Masters Picture Gallery in Dresden, with the two iconic cherubs looking bored at the dramatic events above their heads, as well as his sensitive portraits from the later creative phase of his short life, testify to the immortal genius of this great artist. In my painting, Raphael’s spirit floats as a golden sphere in a sky painted in typical Renaissance colours, like a synthesis of his most beautiful paintings.
